Location: Center of Newton
(Intersection of 206, 94 & Spring Street)

Newton Green, located at the convergence of Routes 206, 94 and Spring Street, is the only county parkland which MGs maintain in Sussex County. It is the site of the Civil War Monument (dedicated to the Union Soldier) and the recently installed Sussex County Veterans Memorial, along with a gazebo garden. The Veteran’s Memorial garden was designed by Barbara Abita (a local landscape designer) using military insignia colors representing the four branches of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

The Master Gardeners have been planting and maintaining the Civil War Monument site since 2009 and added the Veterans Memorial, fountain and gazebo garden in 2011. The volunteers work in partnership with Sussex County’s Facilities Department in maintaining the site, which is seen by hundreds of people daily. This site is a beautification project which is highlighted during important holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and is a service the RCE provides to the community. Passersby frequently stop to ask MGs questions about the garden and horticultural questions in general. The project provides visibility and an avenue of outreach to the public for the MG Program.
