In 2001, park naturalist and interpretive specialist Lynn Groves Lussier began the work of converting the weed-choked brick pathways and plots of an abandoned garden behind the current visitor center into the Kittatinny Valley State Park Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden. A living interpretive display, the garden offers opportunities for nature study, photography, and quiet reflection. The garden is unfenced, providing easy access to humans and wildlife alike. Native perennials such as milkweeds, asters, and wild bergamot were selected to provide a range of food and nectar sources for the larval (caterpillar) and adult stages of our native butterflies, as well as attract ruby-throated hummingbirds. The organic maintenance of the garden (only an organic based pellet-form pre-emergent is applied to the pathways to control the germination of weed seeds) ensures a diversity of insect and avian visitors. Many of Lynn's summer nature programs focus on the ecological interactions taking place within the garden.

Over the years, volunteers have donated their time in conducting various garden chores, such as roto-tilling, weeding, watering, dividing, and mulching, as well as donating and planting flowers. Thanks to the help from Master Gardeners, KVSP was able to expand the garden areas around the visitor center to include an iris garden and a native plant rain garden. A steady stream of volunteers is needed throughout the spring and summer to keep the weeds in check.

This garden provides opportunities to Master Gardeners working in collaboration with KVSP to provide educational outreach efforts to the community.

Any and all help in maintaining the beauty of these garden areas for wildlife and thousands of park visitors is appreciated. The Gardens at Kittatinny Valley State Park are adjacent to the park Visitor Center, located 1 mile north of Route 206, off Goodale Road in Andover Township, NJ. The gardens are open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The visitor center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, as staffing permits.
